Motion Graphics and Compositing - Project II + III: Channel Bumper + Identity

MODULE INSTRUCTIONS:

“FEB - MARCH 2025: DST 60704 / MOTION GRAPHICS & COMPOSITING  MODULE INFORMATION BOOKLET”

Project I: Channel Bumper + Identity (Weighted 20% + 20%)

Project I: Students of the cohort are expected to synthesise their prior knowledge and practise from the prior task and apply/adapt said skills in the secondary project. Students will need to develop an abstract ‘channel bumper’ to serve/promote any business chosen by the student. It must demonstrate the student’s creative approach and coherent understanding of visuals and visually compelling video. The final product should be a 15-second video with original audio and should be published to the students E-Portfolio/submitted as outlined by the MyTimes.

Project II: Students of the cohort are expected to develop more of the previous task and develop their chosen brand/business into a ‘Channel Identity.’ Once more, students are expected to demonstrate their creative thinking and understanding of combining visual and audible mediums to create a compelling and reasonable final product. The final product should be a 20-30-second video with original audio and should be published to the students E-Portfolio/submitted as outlined by the MyTimes.

Project II - Channel Bumper:

WEEK VI: Original Idea + Planning

Outline: For the second project, students would need to create a short channel bumper using Adobe After Effects and were free to choose any brand/business for said channel bumper. It was recommended by the lecturer to pick a local and/or smaller brand as a way to experiment with something more limited/creative and could be used as a personal development. In general, this project is to develop a channel trailer.

“FEB - MARCH 2025: DST 60704 / MOTION GRAPHICS & COMPOSITING  MODULE INFORMATION BOOKLET”

When looking to start this project, I initially had some difficulty in choosing both a topic and a specific art style for the project. I ultimately decided on choosing the popular brand of Coca-Cola as I’d found a lot of their prior works when looking at existing advertising. Continuing this train of thought, I’d go onto Pinterest and would begin looking at styles that are/were similar to the original brand to see if I could make some variation of my own in After Effects.

After looking through both the Pinterest Library and Coca-Cola’s brandings, I walked away with a general theme of flashy, fast-pace or energetic designs to make their product look more relatable and ‘social.’ With the rough resources gathered, it was time to start developing a brief and making a storyboard to help guide the project.

I honestly had a little trouble at first on finding a specific style and a specific brand/channel to work with. I went on Pinterest as well as social media to see what sparks joy for myself. I then found some channels that I may be interested in.

WEEK VII: Write-up Briefing + Storyboarding

Write-up: As recommended by the lecturer, students would be expected to produce a short write-up or sampling of what their goal was for the project. This as a skill is something useful to learn as it helps us in being within a working environment and learning how to explain aspects of your own designs and what your intentions are to your clients. For this, I’d developed a short presentation, outlining the main goals of the channel bumper as well as showing what I want for the project.

Sketches + Moodboard: With the planning completed and approved by the lecturer, I’d begin developing some rough sketches and some storyboards for the project. The goal was to incorporate some of the design features seen within the coke branding and use them as through lines for the animation. It should be noted that I made two versions of this first project due to not fully understanding the briefing which would later be used in the Project III section of the module. Despite this, the original sketches have been added here for original planning and concepts.

WEEK VIII + IX: Final developments

Adobe After Effects: Now that I have a functioning storyboard and approval from the lecturer, I would be able to begin working on the second project and begin translating my designs going into After-Effects. I'd also chosen to do most of my work within After Effects as a limitation to get a better understanding of the process and methods for animation within the program.

In order to start off the project, I’d begin by collecting the real-world items such as the Coca-Cola bottles, variations and ingredients and would edit them using Adobe Photoshop (basic background Crop-out.) Once the files had been edited, I began developing the video by replicating the appearance of the storyboard. From there I’d be able to begin animating them based on the parts in said scene.

“Final Video for Project I”

In this project, I mainly used the tools taught to us in the first tasks, using different compositions for smaller elements to be combined together - using methods of animating like scale, rotation, position etc. However, I’d also learn new skills such as how to better apply effects, adjustments layers and layer options to enhance the visual appearances of the product. Overall, this final project turned out rather well and will take the lessons onto the next task.

Project III - Channel Identity:

WEEK IX: Extended briefing + Recycling designs

Write-up Cont.: As mentioned in the previous task, both Project II and III are based on the same topic with the Project III being about the presentation of multiple products based on the brand - forming more of its identity and the range of their design possibilities. To begin the third Project, I’d go back and revisit both my previous, unfinished animation as well as the brief to make some change ups to better prepare. For this one, I wanted to focus more on the ranges of colour and patterns associated with Coke and their three core flavours + seeing how they can be connected in a final animation.

Sketches + Moodboard: Similar to the second task, I’d revisit sites such as Pinterest to see if there were any more exclusive design features for the ‘Coke Zero’ or ‘Coke Vanilla’ series of products which mainly came down to a generalised colour scheme and an ‘aesthetic’ - Zero appearing more techno-ish while Vanilla was more holiday-esque. With sources gathered, I would then look into the unfinalised attempt of the Second Project to see if I could revitalise some parts of it for this new task.

WEEK X-XI: Animating Using After Effects

After-Effect: Similar to the first instance, a majority of skills and assets used in the Second project have also been used here not only as a time-saving precaution but also as a way to add cohesion between the two projects. In addition to this, previously un-used assets such as the alternate logo, the ingredients + bottle variations, have also been carried over from the previous task and have been used here instead. However, not everything is meant to be a repeat - on this project, the lecturer put a lot more emphasis on designing and perfecting transitions between scenes to make the change in graphics too jarring for the viewer.

In looking to improve my transition skills, I’d look online at various tutorials which taught me interesting ways to utilise the effects panel once again and ways to frame shots to imply a transition is coming (making it easier on the viewer.) Transitions can also be made a bit easier with the understanding and use of returning/follow-through items or design aspects which carry over between scenes to help keep the audience’s eyes focused on one smaller piece so the rest can seamlessly change without their knowledge.

“Final Video for Channel Identity”

Overall, with this third Project, I was not as happy with the final design as I was unable to add the audio within the expected timeframe however I’m pleased with its visual presentation and is better than the project before it.
