Task I / Exercises: Typographic Systems + Type & Play (Week 1 - 3)
Typographic Systems: Students within this cohort are expected to develop an understanding of the visual organisational systems, suggesting in-depth knowledge of the design process. Referencing the variations in Typographical Systems; Students will need to fully explore the capabilities of all eight variations - developing creative samples which should be able to display a predetermined body of text. Students are provided with three choices of predetermined text in which they only need to pick one.
Type & Play: Students within the cohort are expected to select an image depicting either man-made objects, structures or naturally occurring items - ensuring that the image does not contain too many elements. With the image; students will need to analyse, dissect and identify potential letterforms within the image. The ‘depicted letterforms’ will be explored and digitised in order to create a crude representation in which more traditional letterforms can be created. The final forms should appear refined and should reflect where it originally came from.
Task 2 / Exercises: Typographic Systems + Collateral (Week 5 - 8)
Key Artworks: Students within the cohort are expected to explore and compose a series of designs and stylisations centred around the student’s name and perceived personality in order to produce a unique wordmark/lettering. As a result, the student’s final key artwork must create a whole solution; being well-balanced & composed and not complicated or confusing which can degrade the functionality and communication of the key artwork. The completed design will be used in the second half of the task, Task 2B.
Artwork Collateral: Students within the cohort are expected to take their designs from the previous section and utilise it to design, -shirt, lapel pin, an animated key artwork and an Instagram account (or as instructed in class) in order to build up a band design. Students will work on the key artworks first and then fine-tune the details before working and developing the collateral material. At the end, students are to post their designs onto an instagram account (of their choice). The output must result from in-depth exploration and must communicate both visually and textually the desired message and mood set by the key artwork and its function.
Task 3 / Exercises: Type Exploration + Application/Presentation (Week 9 - 14)
Type Exploration: Students within the cohort are expected to create a typeface/font which has been designed to solve a larger problem or to serve as a part of the solution in the area of interest. Students can take their interests in adjacent mediums such as graphic design, animation design, new media/entertainment design but students are also allowed to explore fields beyond their specialisation. At the end of this task, students should have developed a custom generated font (.ttf) which includes Capitals, Minuscules, Punctuation and additional characters.
Application/Presentation: With their completed, custom font; students within the cohort are expected to utilise said font in a way which reflects its application or as a means to present it in real-world examples. Their font should be designed and demonstrated solving the previously determined problem in ways which adds value to an existing use. Students are free to produce experimentative outputs which may result in something novel and unique. Their work can manifest into any kind of format related to the issue being solved or explored or experimented: animation, 3d, print, ambient, projection, movie title or game title, music video, use of different material etc.

STUDENT REFLECTION:
Personal Experience
Experiences: Over these past few weeks, I had been dealing with a large (and frankly unmanaged) work-load which was only made more difficult due to us needing to switch to remote learning. It was an experience trying to stay on top of this module’s expected work not only because I had a smaller time to complete (other module limitations) but, I was occasionally unsatisfied with some of my final outcomes. I became stressed over the idea that my work was simply not enough and I believe that this shows at some points. Regardless, I had an alright-time with this module as each week would bring its own challenges to the table and it helped stress the importance of doing work that you’re happy with; within a timely manner - a good skill for the real-world.
Personal Observations
Observations: I found that due to the rough nature of how our schedule kept shifting, it was more important to get the work more-or-less in early;if not, on time because that way, you would be ready for the next challenge ahead. Another observation I can make after the fact is maintaining clearer communication between myself and the lecturer as there were many a-time when we’d interpreted each other's messages incorrectly - leading to confusion. It's something that can be fixed by asking questions after a discussion about what you believe you heard and seeing if there were any changes.
Findings & Developments
Findings: I found there to be an increased need & importance to doing extensive editing to all files as it is the small errors which can bring down an entire project. In addition, when working with systems such as Adobe Illustrator or Fontlab; it's important to keep all elements of a piece well-organised to prevent such errors from occuring as well as making it easier to edit something should the original idea not go to plan.
